August 11th is National Hip Hop day! Did you know that not only did Lewis Latimer play instruments, his eldest daughter was also an accomplished music teacher and concert pianist! Join educators from the Lewis Latimer House as we celebrate the importance of music for the Latimer family by creating a spinning zoetrope inspired by the beats that keep us movin’ and groovin,’
About Zoetropes:
A zoetrope is a device that creates the illusion of motion by rapidly displaying a series of still images, typically viewed through slits in a rotating cylinder. Connection to Black culture in cinema: In Jordan Peele's NOPE, which explores exploitation, spectacle, representation, and the legacy of Black cowboys, the film opens with the use of a zoetrope-like device, mirroring photographer Eadweard Muybridge's "The Horse in Motion" experiments from 1878.
STEAM Saturdays at LLH are free events, open to all ages and abilities, that feature a hands-on activity, a family-friendly scavenger hunt, and self-guided tours. Drop in any time between 12PM - 4PM! Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
