Mini Family Textiles

  • Queens Public Library, South Jamaica 108-41 Guy R Brewer Boulevard Queens, NY, 11433 United States (map)

How might you tell your family’s story using patterns and fabric?

Family quilts have been used for centuries as a way to keep families warm, to celebrate events, and to pass on traditions and knowledge. Join educators from the Lewis Latimer House Museum to experiment with colors, symbols, and shapes to design a mini family textile, and learn about Dr. Winifred Norman, the granddaughter of the Black inventor and innovator, Lewis Latimer, who kept his legacy alive.

Participants will also receive a free copy of Lewis Latimer: The Man Behind a Better Light Bulb (Smithsonian Little Explorer) and Keyana Loves School, a book about a young girl’s quilting project. Both books will be available on a first come, first served basis.
